Shelby - Mr. Samuel “Larry “ Smith, age 75, peacefully transitioned on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at Atrium Health-Pineville, NC. He was born November 1, 1949 to the late Henry Roy Smith and Causie Lee Smith Larry was a 1968 graduate of Burns High School, Lawndale, NC. He was a previous longstanding, loyal and dedicated member of Good Samaritan Fellowship Baptist Church, where he taught and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Deacon Board, church council and finance committee member. At present, he was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church . He held multiple positions working at PPG, Shelby Concrete, City of Shelby, Philan’s Florist, John Deer of Gastonia (Management), and City of Kings Mountain. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a passion for God’s Word and willingly discussed it with anyone he met. Even after his health started to fail, he continued to have bible study in the home with friends. He showed just how much he genuinely cared for friends and relatives by regularly calling and giving them an encouraging word. He loved music, singing and playing the bass guitar for different gospel groups. His favorite words for any situation he faced were “GOD GOT ME”. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Smith and sister, Lizzie Mae Collins. Left to cherish fond memories, the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Flora Smith, three loving daughters, Veronica, Angela, and Chondale Smith (Charlene), all of Shelby, NC; three cherished grandchildren, Rodriguez Petty, Preston Smith, and Aaliyah Petty, all of Shelby, NC; four great-grandchildren, Tristen, Kingsley, and Peyton Petty and Destinee Blue of Shelby, NC; two brothers, Hogar Smith (Elizabeth) of Cherryville, NC, Forest (Gloria) Smith, Mesa Arizona and one sister, Fairy Borders of Shelby, NC; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A best friend of many years, James Robbs and a close spiritual sister, Sarah Moon. Larry will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of biblical knowledge, wisdom and service will continue to inspire us all.
