John Milton McMahan

It is with heavy hearts that our family shares with you the passing of our beloved husband, father, and PaPaw.  He has been a trouper over the past year, fighting immense muscle and joint pain throughout his body.  There is peace knowing he is at rest and comfortable.He is survived by his wife of 58 years Cynthia Payne McMahan, their two sons Ryan and Kevin, and special daughters-in-law Stephanie and Jenny.  John cherished his six amazing grandchildren: Chase (17), Leah (15), Connor (11), Henley (11), Bryce (9), and Austin (8).

John and Cindy met way back in 1962 in Dallas, TX, when he was 17 and she was 13. Their fathers worked together for Arvin Industries in 1949 when Cindy was born.  Eventually both families ended up in Dallas where it all began, and the rest is a wonderful long-lived history AND family story.

Soon after marrying, John was ready to finish his college education at East Texas State University while Cindy worked in a local doctor’s office to put food on the table.  After graduation they moved to GA where John travelled across five southeastern states for Alden Shoe Co.  He did this for about five years and then decided he could follow in the footsteps of his uncles and father and open his own McMahan Shoes in the Elizabeth area of Charlotte, NC.  He stayed the course for 38 years until it was time to retire, leave the city, and hit the road in an RV, a.k.a. “The Bus,” with Cindy, his always and forever copilot, in the seat beside him. 

John is preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Mildred McMahan, and cousins Mack, Butch, and Joan.  He is survived by his brother Curtis (Charlotte) McMahan and many McMahan cousins. John will be missed beyond belief and remembered fondly by all who knew him.
