Spartanburg - Ella May Fahel, 87, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on January 6, 2024, Ella May was born on July 22, 1936 to Howard H. and Florence A. Hirtzel in Shumway, Illinois. She graduated from Beecher City High School in Beecher City, Illinois before moving with her family to Las Cruces, New Mexico. There she married Bonifacio “Bud” T. Fahel, Jr. on May 30, 1958. They went on to have three children: Julie Davenport, Leigh Fahel, and Valerie Fahel-Schaffer, and they lived in several places, including El Paso, Texas; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Hudson, New Hampshire, before settling in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1978. Not one to sit still, she worked a variety of corporate jobs with the RDF Corporation in Hudson, the Hungry Bull Main Office in Spartanburg, PDI Services in Greenville; retiring from Dr. Luther Diehl’s office in Spartanburg in the early 2000s.

Ella May was best known for creating homemade cards, which many people around the world looked forward to receiving each year at Christmas, birthdays, and other celebrations. She continued her craft for many years despite her arthritis. She loved to travel, often driving hundreds of miles on cross-country trips. She enjoyed visitors at her home, where she lived happily with her cats, and her door was always open for friends and family. She was lovingly called “Granma Fine ‘n’ Dandy” by some of her grandchildren.

Ella May was predeceased by her parents Howard H. Hirtzel and Florence A. (Tarrant) Hirtzel, her brother, William “Bill” Hirtzel, and her husband, Bonifacio “Bud” T. Fahel, Jr. She is survived by her children: daughter, Julie K. Davenport of Greenwood, SC; son, Leigh H. Fahel (Karen) of Manchester, NH; and daughter, Valerie S. Fahel-Schaffer (Greggory) of Gaffney, SC as well as her grandchildren (in age order): granddaughter, Monica D. Toth (Billy) of Tallahassee, FL; grandson, Aric J. Fowler of Gaffney, SC; granddaughters, Arianna J. Fowler of Spartanburg, SC; Aneira N. Schaffer of Gaffney, SC; Deborah C. Fahel of Manchester, NH; and Elizabeth A. Fahel of Manchester, NH.

A celebration of Ella May Fahel’s life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 20,2024 at Overbrook Presbyterian Church located at 919 Overbrook Drive, Gaffney, SC 29341.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hope for Paws or to an animal rescue charity of your choosing.
