Charlotte - Freddie Ross "Buckwheat:" Tillman, age 62, of 2717 Marmac Rd. Charlotte, NC peacefully transitioned peacefully into eternal rest with his Saviour on Friday, November 23, 2018 at his residence.
Freddie was born on November 14, 1956 in Anson County, North Carolina to the late Mr. Fred Tillman, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Helen Robinson Tillman. He was a graduate of Bowman Senior High School in Wadesboro, NC. Besides his parents, Freddie was also preceded in death by one sibling, Fred Tillman, Jr.
He was a faithful and dedicated member of O'Connor Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Belmont, NC where he served as a Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Kitchen Committee. Freddie worked with Anson County Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for a total of over 38 years. He was also employed by US Foods ( formerly Bigger Brothers) and The Charlotte Observer for many years. He later became employed with Autozone, Charlotte, NC.
Freddie had a genuine heart for people and did not meet a stranger. He had a passion for cooking, providing handyman services, and taking vacations with his family. He was known for frying the absolute best chicken, baking his pound cakes and cornbread cake, and being the best grill master around. His love for serving others pushed him to begin his own catering business, CFL Tillman's Creations. Freddie was a die-hard Washington Redskins fan but also still supported the Carolina Panthers as his home team. He also loved the UNC Tarheels basketball team. He loved sports so much that he would even coach and referee for various games within the area.
He leaves to cherish many precious memories, his loving wife of 25 years, Mrs. LaVaughn Means-Tillman of the home; grandson that he raised as his very own child Mr. Cornelius Darnell Tillman of Charlotte, NC, two sons; Walter Marquis Tillman, Houston, TX and Cornelius Tillman, Sr. Charlotte, NC; three brothers, Minister Lee Thomas, Sr. ( Elaine), Wadesboro, NC, Mr. King Sylvester "Bill" Tillman ( Ann), Laurel Hill, NC and Mr. Paul Bennett Tillman, Wadesboro, NC; his beloved mother-in-law that he adored Ms. Emily Loretta Means, Belmont, NC; beloved and cherished in-laws James and Barbara Gordon, Gastonia, NC, Deacon Ezra "Tic" Means, Belmont, NC, Kay Gordon, Gastonia, NC; a special nephew he loved as a son, Tech Sgt. Lee Thomas Tillman, Jr. Nashville, TN; a niece that he cherished Porshe' Robinson Gastonia, NC, a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends and also a special sister to him, Janice Petteway-Burden (Lucas) Charlotte, NC,
The family are meeting at 209 Clay Street Belmont, N.C.
Funeral: Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 2pm at O'Conner Grove A.M.E. Zion Church. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.
Burial: Henry's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery
