Gaffney - Shedrick Eugene “Gene” Manning, 74, of Gaffney, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Mary Black Health System Gaffney.
He was born December 23, 1943, in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He was a 1962 graduate of Granard High School in Gaffney and graduated as a barber from Denmark Area Trade School in Denmark, South Carolina. He briefly partnered in a barbershop in downtown Gaffney before going to work at Limestone Mill. He left there for Milliken Magnolia Finishing Plant in Blacksburg, where he worked 35 years before retirement.
He was a volunteer fireman for the Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department, a certified first responder and member of the board of the Macedonia Water Works.
He was a choir member and trustee at Mikes Creek Baptist Church before being ordained there as a deacon; he was later ordained as a deacon at Shady Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Olee and Parlee Manning. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy J. Manning; two sons, Terry E. Manning, of Savannah, Georgia, and William O. Manning of Charlotte, North Carolina; granddaughters, Meana Jean Manning and Camilla Marie Manning of Charlotte; grandsons, William Manning Jr. of Charlotte, and Rashaun Harris of Gaffney; great-granddaughter, Nyla Harris; brothers Rayford K. (Lee) Manning of Columbia, and Julius (Patricia) Manning and Laymon Manning Sr. of Gaffney; sisters Lois (Carl) Bridges, Ocie Manning and Sounja Camp of Gaffney; sisters in law, Dianne Norris and Mary Whittenburg (Dewey) of Gaffney; mother in law, Minnie Hush; nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
