John Ryerson Obituary

Simpsonville -John Lawrence Ryerson, 84, of Simpsonville, SC, passed away on March 10th 2024. He was born in Darby, PA, on June 1st 1939, to the late Dorothea and Wilbur Ryerson. He was preceded in death by his loving spouse, Antonia Marie Ryerson.

John is survived by his daughter Michele Anne Watson and her husband Coy, their sons Caleb and Landon, and his adorable dog Brodie. He is also survived by his son David John Ryerson and his children Dustin, Dezarae, and Dakota, Robert Wendell Ryerson of Pembroke, Massachusetts and Nancy Ryerson, Kenney, Ocean Park, Maine alongside numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Growing up in Massachusetts for the majority of his young life, John graduated from Needam High School in 1957 before pursuing his BSEE at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Class of 1961, Cum Laude). He then furthered his education at the Pratt Institute where he earned a Masters in Computer Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

Making the ultimate sacrifice for our country, John enlisted in the US Army Reserve. He served as first lieutenant for several years before his honorable discharge in May of 1969.

For over 30 years, John was a dedicated employee at IBM, serving as a program manager before being promoted to chief strategist.

There, John was one of the first digital computer pioneers, paving the way for many modern day applications of computer systems.  After retiring, John kept himself busy doing consulting work and traveling.

As a lifelong New England sports fan, you could always find John keeping up with his Red Soxs and Patriots, alongside finding time for politics, sports, and quality time spent with his family.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to John Ryerson, a man whose passion and selflessness shone through for all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s honor to the American Heart Association.
