Joseph Beasley

Joseph "Joe" Beasley, 86, of Kings Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. He was born on Dec. 23, 1926, in Darlington County, S.C., to the late Boyd and Mary Jett Beasley.

Joe was employed as a truck driver with Thomas & Howard for many years and retired from Foote Mineral in Kings Mountain. He joined First Baptist Church of Earl at an early age and attended until his health failed.

Joe enjoyed hunting and watching football, Political Smack-Down, and back-to-back episodes of "In The Heat of The Night" on television. He loved his family and each and every one of them was important to him. He gave every one of his nieces and nephews their own personal nickname and called them by that name through adulthood. Family reunions were the highlight of his life and he would start preparing months in advance. He often financed most of the expenses himself so that every family member would be able to attend the reunion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eight siblings, Marion, Roland and Boyd Jr. Beasley, Jessie Lee Pettigrew, Lessie Maddox, Mary Johnson, Edith Burson and Bertha Jennings; one niece; one great-niece; three great-great-nieces; six nephews; a god-daughter, Angie Caldwell Webber; and his dog, Frankie.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his adopted sister, Geraldine Accor of Jersey City, N.J.; 24 nieces and nephews, including Brenda A. Lipscomb of Grover, who was raised in the same household with him and assumed the roles of niece, sister and daughter and later caregiver; 47 great-nieces and nephews, including Garland Johnson of Elgin, S.C., his protégé and right-hand man; 52 great-great-nieces and nephews; seven great-great-great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The family expresses a sincere thank you to the staff of White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain for the special care they gave Joe.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. The family will also meet at 1514 Long Branch Road in Grover.

Ms. Betty L. Henderson

Ms. Betty L. Henderson, 67, of Shelby, departed this life on Sunday, March 31, 2013, at Cleveland Regional Memorial Hospital in Shelby.

Ms. Henderson was born in Robeson County, on March 16, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Ms. Gladys Locklear of Lumberton, and the late Mr. Sterling Page Locklear of Rowland.

Ms. Henderson is preceded in death by a son, Mr. Jeffery Lynn Henderson.

Ms. Henderson was a faithful employee of Phoenix Counseling Center. She loved her job and dedicated her time and years of service to helping others in need.

The recovery community and the Phoenix Counseling Center Family lost a sincere advocate for the individuals we serve. Ms. Betty was always an enduring presence to every individual that stepped into the Crisis Centers. Her voice will forever be in the back of our heads speaking what was the right thing to do for the people we serve and followed up with a hug. You will never meet a better person nor one that truly loved the clients that we serve. She treated each and every one of them as she would treat her own child and in turn they all treated her with the love and respect of a mother. She was a wonderful, loving no-nonsense woman. She "mothered" each person that worked with her. Her passing will affect so many people. We loved her. We will all miss her more than you can imagine. Our prayers go out to her family and to all that knew her. We were all part of her extended family. She will be truly missed but never forgotten. She touched each and every one of us that worked with her. Her heart always had room for one more person.

Ms. Henderson is survived by her loving grandchildren of her home, Ally Michelle Henderson and Jeffery Michael Henderson; a son, Robert Brian Henderson (Whitney); granddaughter, Megan Deaton and husband Brian and great-grandson Xander, Courtney Goodwin and husband Brandon, all of Shelby. Ms. Henderson also leaves many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends in Shelby and Robeson County.

Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to each service.

Funeral Services: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Genesis Chapel, 407 East Grover Street, Shelby, and 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Hill Baptist Church in Roland, N.C.

Coleman "Tot" Whitworth, 73, of 115 Nolan Road, Lawndale, entered eternal rest on Monday, March 4, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 13, 1939, in Cleveland County, to the late Ardell Whitworth Sr. and the late Susie Mae Gordon Whitworth Walton.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Etha Mae Gordon Whitworth; two brothers, Ardell Whitworth Jr. and Edward Whitworth; and three step-brothers, Cleveland Walton, Edgar Hugh Walton, and Woodrow Walton.

Coleman is survived by three step-sons, Freddie (Chuckie) Huland Williams (caregiver) of the home, Charles Williams (Norma) of Willard, Md., and Harry Williams (Debra) of Lawndale; one brother, Willie Lee Whitworth of Shelby; two sisters, Emma Ruth Whitworth Johnson of Hickory, and Angeline Walton Byrd (Odell) of Lawndale; eight grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at First Baptist of Lawndale, and at other times at the home at 115 Nolan Road, Lawndale.

Celebration of Life Service: 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist, Lawndale

Calvin Donald Stroud, 61, of 1928-B Elders Road, Kingstown, departed this life on March 2, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center.

Donald was born on Oct. 24, 1951, to the late Charlie Usher and Mary Virginia Stroud in Polkville.

Donald was a member of Palmer Grove Baptist Church .

He was preceded in death by one son, Tyreze Odoms; and two brothers, John Gidney and Charles Stroud.

Donald leaves to cherish fond memories four daughters, Daphne Surratt of Morganton, Kisha Spikes Smalls (James) of Texas, Shonda Witherspoon of Shelby, and Anisha Clark of Lawndale; three sons, Tyree Parks of Washington, D.C., Orlando Daniels (Y’Kashia) of Grover, and Calvin Stroud Jr. of the home; three brothers, Willie Stoud (Brenda) and Avery Stroud (Patty), both of Shelby, and Edgar Stroud of Philadelphia; four sisters, Carolyn Josey and Shirley Humphries, both of Shelby, Nelline Hoey of Md., and Patricia Schenck (Franklin) of Lawndale; eight grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
